Kosovo Muslims Probe Mufti's Anti-Women Rant
The Islamic Community of Kosovo is investigating a mufti who called women who have sex before marriage' sluts', 'bitches' and 'garbage'.
Sabri Bajgora, chief imam of the Islamic Community of Kosovo, told Balkan Insight that the Council of the Islamic Community of Kosovo in Prizren had just started probing the cleric's inflammatory sermon on women.
The investigations follow release of a video on YouTube some days ago showing the mufti of Prizren, Irfan Salihu, insulting women who have sex before marriage in the strongest terms.
“Any woman who has intimate acts without being married according to provisions of the Islam is a slut and a bitch,” Salihu said during his sermon. “Leave the garbage out so everyone will know which of them was used,” he added.
The video has caused harsh reactions in Pristina, where women right groups have demanded disciplinary action.
Kosovo lawmakers have also condemned Salihu’s speech, some describing it as insulting and derogatory.
“The video is a hail of unrestrained hateful emotions, which do not look like those of a preacher. On the contrary, this a sermon about violence containing grave insults,” Teuta Sahatqija, from the opposition Democratic League of Kosovo, said.
Alma Lama, from the opposition Self-Determination Movement, also condemned the sermon, saying that Kosovo faced a “huge risk of religious fundamentalism”.
Islam is the predominant faith of Kovovo’s majority ethnic Albanian population, the Bosniak, Gorani, and Turkish communities, and some members of its Roma, Ashkali and Egyptian minorities.
